Hahira, Georgia, located 11
miles north of Valdosta,
was incorporated on
October 2, 1891. Many of Hahira’s
earliest settlers were cotton and tobacco
farmers, and by the late 1920s and early
1930s, commercial beekeeping became
big business.
In 1981, the annual Hahira Honey Bee
Festival was born, a week long celebration
beginning October 1st featuring arts and crafts,
live entertainment, a beauty pageant, a
parade, and of course, demonstrations of the
secret life of bees.
In 2006, over 20,000 visitors attended the festivities in the heart of Hahira, where residents
live within walking distance of all their daily
needs from shopping to banking to
discussing sports and politics at the local
café. Hahira is one of Georgia’s small
towns designated as a "Better Hometown
Community" by the Georgia Department of
Community Affairs for its revitalization of
downtown.
Hahira’s city beautification program has resulted in recognition as "Tree City USA", and each year its citizens join together in "Let’s Keep
Georgia Peachy Clean" clean up week, keeping the city sparkling and
planting flowers and shrubs.
With a population of 1,600, Hahirans enjoy a charming, small town
